(Capo Seattle)

“We know this: the earth does not belong to man, the man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood which unites one family. It was not the man to weave the web of life, he is merely a strand. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.“
(Chief Seattle)

Five years ago I was in Africa to dedicate my thesis to the creation of a a social and economic development through the arrangement of tourist routes sustainable and respectful of the nature of the population and local traditions. I took as an example a reserve where the project Paw worked to create something ambitious but at the same time admirable: a tourist circuit that could safeguard the environment and whose construction and operation would involve the local population. I remember that whenever I spoke of the themes of my thesis, many people looked at me with the eyes of those who do not know what the hell I was talking about. Someone asked me why I was not dedicated myself to topics best known as the study of the economic dynamics concerning the tourist villages in Kenya. generating great profits. Once again I felt misunderstood in my ideals and it seemed that people do not understand the importance of our land and the need for all the human beings could live in dignified and respectful conditions.

Then, this spring I was invited to participate in a journey along the Via Francigena in Tuscany and I found someone who believed in my ideals and in the need to preserve the land, the traditions and the local productions. This ancient pilgrimage, now refurbished and enhanced every day, is giving the opportunity for small businesses to show their beauty with the simplicity of the past. Dusting off the culture of travel on foot or by bike, rural areas and the exploration of the ancient villages, the contact with the local population and the typical agri-food products and handicraft, this circuit has restarted where tourism was dying. Small businesses with a great aesthetic and cultural value but far from large centers of tourism, live again now trying to shed light on its authenticity and playing a card that globalization is obscuring more and more: the typicality, the return to the ancient and simple values of the reception and the choice of a slower pathr. Go on foot or by sustainable means, it allows a better insight into the landscape and the reality that surrounds us, stopping occasionally to discover the flavor of the area and giving value to every single step.

During this experience I was able to discover a different everyday life and the work of people who still bring luster to the ancient local tradition, even at the cost of suffering from the economic crisis and the growing competition in the market.

I found myself exploring the workshop of the brothers Rubino, ceramic artists, who created SanGimignano1300, an amazing miniature that perfectly reproduces the city as it appeared in the 14th Century. The craftsmanship is important because it represents our culture and tradition and preserves the ability of talented people. The beauty of this art is the beauty of our country.

I have been also in the ancient thermal baths of Montecatini, located in a beautiful old building, They still preserve the curative potential of the water and offer different treatments according to the needs of patients.

I could go through some routes of the Via Francigena by foot, as the path from Abbey Island to Monteriggioni, and cycling through the woods and hills of Val D'Elsa. In both cases, it was great to go through rural areas far away from the traffic and chaos and where life still moves according to the needs of ancient crafts.

I tasted the typical Tuscan cuisine in restaurants that give a great importance to the authenticity of the products, reinventing the old recipes and using products at zero km.

All these valuable aspects of our country are gradually losing to stand behind an economy that runs tirelessly toward models that often do not belong to us. Instead of running without ever taking a breath, we should just stop and focus on what are the best features of our culture, enhancing them and starting again to walk according to our personal pace. Italy is a country rich in beauty from every point of view and the beauty is there, imperturbable and often overlooked, because we are committed to follow rules that do not reflect us. We have just to learn again to walk at a slow pace through a wealth we already have and that we should not leave food in the dust.

Sai, prima non dedicavo particolare attenzione all'ecosostenibilità.
