The sound of silence

Cormac McCarthy

"He said that the world could only be known as it existed in the hearts of men. Because it seemed a place which contained men, it was actually a place contents in their hearts and then, to know it, was there you had to watch, and learn to know those hearts and to do that, you had to live with men and not just passed between them."

Cormac McCarthy

I'm back in Tuscany, I left again Sardinia, packed my few things for the umpteenth time and took a flight to the mainland. Summer seems to be so far away ... and yet it's been a little while since I went to the sea. Those places that I visited a few weeks ago, they still sailing in my mind like a boat that I don't want to leave. Probably one of the things I love most is the possibility of having lived for many years in a place that is out of time, with its rhythms, its pauses, its noises and its dynamics independent of what happens in the rest of the world. An island in the sea is one of the few places that is submerged in modernity but it is able to pursue its own rules of life and this is a conception of time that can not be understood if you do not live there.

I miss the sound of the sea, that series of sounds created by the waves when they shatter on the rocks or on the beach, or the slight whispering of the sea driven by the wind, or the noise of the sea created by a storm. I miss the silence that surrounds my room when nature is silent and it is interrupted only by a few slight noises that spread from somewhere. I miss those sunny days when everything seems calm and the melodies in the air set the time to music and makes it light and smooth. I miss the sound of the wind penetrating through the leaves of trees or through the windows producing continuous hissing and jarring that break the silence with a series of dramatic sounds. I miss the time when it rains and the drops fall on the glass and they chase each other up to join and become one. I miss the feeling of suspension in the morning, when life is struggling to get going and evolves phlegmatic and cautious waiting for the afternoon.

These sounds mark the time better than any clock. It 'a mental time that is punctuated by the habit of living close to the land. When you leave it, you would like to continue to live that flow of time as if nothing had changed. However, basically you have to find a new temporal gait that makes you become attached to the place where you are and make you find the usual and ordinary noises that accompany your days. The sounds gradually become part of you and of your life as the new sound of footsteps, the blowing of the wind with different intensities, the falling rain more energetic or new unexpected noises coming from the street. Each place has its own sound and each person perceives them in a personal way, stores them and adopt them. The sounds help you feel at home because they always repeat similar and they give you the feeling that this place is a little yours because you recognize the rhythms and the cadences.

Between one sound of the city and another there is a multitude of new people; each of them carries its own melody and among them you have to find  those melodies that harmonize better with yours. Some, join together and clash, others join melodiously, others struggle to tune up; they chase and struggle to fit the notes next to each other in order to create the perfect melody, the most sought and desiderable but also more difficult to find. You stroll down the street and you have the world by side, and you can go right as if nothing resound in the air or you can stop for a moment to listen if something is in the air and try to tun up that sound with yours. This is the life away from home and from your land. Or perhaps it is simply the meaning of life.

  10. Cormac McCarthy is intense. On the road trip last year, one of my friends was attempting to read "The Road." She kept reading it aloud just to annoy another friend of mine. He is difficult sometimes ... admittedly, I struggle with his wisdom, his thoughts. However, I will say this: a place is what we make it to be. My hometown in Iowa is small, a 1,000 people. I can think of many good things about that town, but I can also think of a few negatives. I see it from my perspective, from my experiences. The town may appear different to someone else, may have given them different opportunities and a different perspective. It's a truthful philosophy, really. It's similar to the idea that, today, I may have a GOOD day, while my neighbor, just one house over, could have a BAD day.
