Martinique

Alda Merini

"I close my eyes, I pulled back a step.
I am another.
I am elsewhere."
Alda Merini

L'Anse a l'Ane.

Closing my eyes, I can feel the peace of the Caribbean and of this small village by the sea. Anse a l'Ane. This small bay is easily reached by ferry from the port of Fort de France, the most important city in Martinique. In less than an hour, you are catapulted into a little paradise, consisting of a long beach, small bars and restaurants on the sea, one supermarket and a tobacco shop. The other structures are homes or houses-vacation. All on foot within minutes.

La vita all'aria aperta è molto apprezzata in quest'isola.

As always, Airbnb has saved our lives with its competitive prices in places where it would be very difficult to accommodate. So, we ended up in this 70s cottage, with sea views, two minutes from the beach. The highlight was the veranda. Martinique's hot enough to use this space for both lunch and for dinner but with a little fresh breeze, which is a gift during the days of sultriness. The outdoor life is very popular on this island. The only time where people take shelter in the house is during the hot summer, especially after lunch. For the rest, we must say that the locals are not hard workers, but most of them love idleness and work the right need. They spend most of the time in the beach or in outdoor spaces.

In the house there was a beautiful library. Of those where you can take a book and leave another one, for the future tenants. A cute idea that I always liked. If you want to stay here, check out the profile of its kind owner Stefano, who rent also another room in his house.

This arrangement allowed us to go to the beach every day, to swim in the early morning. The water was blue and the beach was never too crowded. I loved just that. Probably, thanks to the end of the tourist season and the fact that local people can go to the beach almost all year, there was no overcrowding typical of the Italian cities in the summer. Then, this beach is also quite isolated compared to other locations, so it has been the perfect end to our stay in the Caribbean.

The ferry from Fort de France to the Anse a L'Ane has a price of seven euro return. During the week, it is very common. However, be careful during the weekend, the celebrations and various and any of the Caribbean. Remember that for the locals, every occasion is good to celebrate and then the times may be reduced or even abolished. Example, the Good Friday before Easter is a day of celebration unlike Italy, and this creates a bridge of unexpected festivities that reduce your ability to move. Do not underestimate the natural Caribbean propensity to idleness that could ruin your plans.

And you must start to think like them, "Enjoy life slowly." as he told us a local guy.

  5. "Enjoy life slowly". Hai ragione!
