aiutarla a riconoscerla e a difenderla."
I cento passi

"We should remind people what is Beauty,
we should help to recognize it and to defend it. "
The Hundred Steps

Two days ago it was a rainy Sunday, one of those classic days when the house is dark and gloomy. For hours I did not hear nothing but the roar of the rain on the windows and the wind noise seeping through the cracks creating those typical shrill and plaintive sounds. As often happens in all my gloomy day, I started to rummage through old photographs, finding a few shots of a cold afternoon spent in Liguria, at the Pass of Centocroci. It seems that this name comes from the fact that in the past, in this area, operated a band of robbers who had killed more than a hundred travelers. Up here, there is also a monument dedicated to the fallen partisans during the Second World War and belonging to the "Partisan Division Centocroci" who fought for freedom without adhering to any political movement. This brings to my mind a quote from Antonio Gramsci (Italian politician) that I read recently:

"I hate indifferent people. I believe that living is like to be partisans. Whoever truly lives must be a citizen and partisan. Indifference is apathy, parasitism, cowardice, it is not life. Therefore I hate indifferent people."

Basically, this is my thought. The indifference towards life, its possibilities and its problems is what I hate most; around us there is a world full of opportunities and choices to be made to improve our situation and that of those around us. That snow and ice that I saw many years ago on that mountain, return each year to wrap the nature and then melt in the spring. Each season gets its job even though they knows that soon, most likely, they will have to give way to a new climate time. Nothing stays stationary, everything evolves. Joys and sorrows alternate, sometimes you laugh, others you cry, sometimes you feel strong and invincible, others you are fragile and you feel that you are breaking, some days you think you can make a difference, others you do not want to take responsibility for anything, but life is still a struggle to deal with all the forces available. To live means to be partisan, to fight for your beliefs and for your ideals, to be on your own, do not give up even if everything invites you to do so. To live is to run through the wild woods until you reach a green meadow, you stop to get some sunshine, warm up and then get up and go back to running, despite the rocky road, towards your goal, towards your own life.

A thought to those who have previously fought hard for their rights, to whom everyday in the world continues to do so with great courage and strength, to those who are trying to changethemselves.

  3. Indifference. Oh, Valentina. You nailed it. My friends and I talk about this often. We are Americans, yes, but are not fans of the culture as it is now. Our country has a mindset that is very ... selfish. Or very one-minded. Something. It's about "What can be done that is best for me?" and never "What could be done that would be best for society?" Here, if a person does not want for anything, they do not pay attention to the problems of the unfortunate. They do not care. They think, "Well, if I'm self-made, they can do it too." I hate to use such strong words, but sometimes ignorance is in there, too. Personally, I am much happier when I bring joy and happiness to someone else than if I care only about myself. My joy comes from making others happy.

    1. Thank you very much for your opinion!
I think that you're right about your country. I believe that America is, at the same time, selfish and generous. Selfish because many people is self-made and they act only for their own personal profit. However, I admire those Americans who take their position against this mentality. I believe that your have a very strong personality in your negative or positive attitude. and you decide to do something you make the difference. You are part of that America I love :)
